  • Nuovo theme update: trying to get the theme options stuff going

    Last Updated: April 21, 2017

So it’s been a while. Actually that’s an understatement. It’s been about two months since I last touched the Nuovo theme, mostly because this semester has been killer. But now that I feel like I’ve been able to get a handle on the semester, I’m looking to getting back into the saddle with theme.

  • Nuovo update: fix one thing, break 10 others, that’s the way coding goes

    Last Updated: April 21, 2017

So on the one hand, I actually managed to complete the one task that I had set out to do a while back: rewrite the theme options page so that I had better control over the formatting of the page and to be able to add check boxes to the form.

  • Substantial Improvement With Nuovo Theme

    Last Updated: April 21, 2017

It’s been a while to say the least since I was last able to get some solid work on the Nuovo Theme I’m working on to get into the WordPress theme directory, but the progress I made this past week was great. First off, I finally finished the theme option page complete overhaul. I figured […]

  • Changing colors with Nuovo and formatting for tablets

    Last Updated: April 21, 2017

Last week, I made a ton of progress with creating the Nuovo WordPress theme, finally figuring out how to get scripts into the theme option page and fixing the featured post slideshow. This week, I was able to make even more progress with the theme, mainly focused on switching the color theme based on the user preference and started working on the tablet version.

  • Finishing the tablets and heading for mobile

    Last Updated: April 21, 2017

So formatting the theme for tablets turned out to be way easier than what I was anticipating. Essentially all I had to do with it was divide the sidebar into two and put it under the main post area. Also, I moved the social icons to under the header and had to eliminate one of the icons for the time being to make it all fit.

  • Nearing the end of one process and starting another

    Last Updated: April 21, 2017

I see the light at the end of the tunnel, but know there’s another tunnel immediately after. Such is the life of a coder I guess. At any rate, it feels really good to know I’m coming to the end of a process I began back in December of last year and to see the progress this theme has made since I set out planning it. To be honest, while most of it looks like I envisioned when I started creating it six months ago, but there are a good number of things that look nothing like I originally planned, and that’s okay. I’m still learning the ins and outs of CSS, HTML, JavaScript, PHP and web design as well as what works and what looks good on the web.

  • Taking a break before the overhaul to enter WordPress theme directory

    Last Updated: April 21, 2017

So after a month or so of hard work getting the Nuovo theme up to where it is today, this past week has much needed break away from all of the coding and stress that comes with building a Wordpress theme. Well, it hasn’t been too much of a break. I’ve been helping out at church every day this week, but it has gotten me a way from the computer, something I sorely needed to do. And in the meantime, I’ve been able to read some computer books I’ve been meaning to read.

  • The pesky thing that is the theme options page

    Last Updated: April 20, 2017

Going into this theme build, I figured that the hardest part of building a theme would be theme options. What I didn’t realize was how hard and how pesky that darn thing is.

  • Decisions abound with Nuovo mobile/tablet design

    Last Updated: April 20, 2017

I’ve always hated making tough decisions. There’s always that nagging feeling that the other option you didn’t make was actually the better decision. That’s sort of what I have to deal with going forward with this Nuovo theme. Right now, I’m filling the mobile styles for screen sizes between 320 pixels (the width of the iPhone and minimum width of virtually all smartphones) and 650 pixels (the lowest screen width the tablet styles can work without breaking the main content areas).

  • Coming down the home stretch with Nuovo

    Last Updated: April 20, 2017

I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Roughly six months after beginning this project to create a WordPress theme, I’m almost done with it and ready to submit it for the WordPress theme directory. All that remains now is the official debugging by following what the theme reviewers do to make sure a theme is eligible for the directory or not.

  • Nitpick cleaning on one theme and starting designing another

    Last Updated: April 20, 2017

So in the past couple of weeks, I’ve found that it’s easier to create a theme than it is to go through and nitpick and clean it. Case in point, this week it’s taken me a while to knock down the number of HTML validation errors from 160 to 91, though a good majority of that came Thursday. And that was on the homepage alone. I assume that validation errors aren’t that exciting, but there’s some good news on the computer front.
