So a lot has happened on Sports Bench since the last time I wrote an update for the package.
The biggest change is that the package is almost complete. Since returning from Rio at the end of August, I’ve finished adding the features that will be in the first release and extensive testing to make sure that everything works no matter what scenario end users put it through. I was also able to set up the auto updates for the theme and plugin like those in the WordPress directory, making it easier for users to update.
I also ended up writing a detailed manual for both the theme and the plugin. The theme was the easiest one to write since that was like all of the other theme readme, but the plugin readme is much more extensive. In addition to the usual listing of features and how to’s, I also added a codex section that goes through all of the functions that can be used on the front end for developers who might want to display the information in other ways.
Considering all of the work that’s gone into this, I’m going to end up selling the package for $35, with the plugin costing $25 and the theme costing $10.
If you’re curious as to what this looks like in a live browser, there’s a package demo here. That actually ended up being the most difficult part as I tried to do too much with it and ended up having to scale back the demo.
As for what’s next, it’s a lot of waiting and making small tweaks to get the package as good as it can be for the first release. There are two items in the upcoming WordPress 4.7 release — a fix in compatibility between jQuery tabs and the Customizer and new custom post templates — that will be in the package, so I’ll have to wait until it’s released on Dec. 6. Until then, it’ll be about getting the package ready for the release and finding out how to market this whole thing too.
