One of the most popular website types around is the portfolio website.
Almost everyone needs a portfolio website these days. Anyone who works in a visual medium — graphics, art, photography, videography, etc. — must have an online portfolio to display their latest and greatest work. And to be honest, a lot of other professions should have a portfolio site as well, especially writers.
Heck, even this website started as a portfolio website, first as a journalist/writer portfolio and morphing into a web developer portfolio. So I know the struggle of trying to put together a website that shows off what you can do in the best way possible.
Sometimes creating that portfolio website can be a challenge. You might be told by a college professor — like I was in journalism school — that you need to create a portfolio website. But how do you do that, especially if you’re not a web designer or developer.
Selecting that perfect theme that someone else in the class hasn’t can be a challenge. Or maybe as a writer you find the perfect portfolio theme you like, but it’s more suited for a visual profession or vice versa.
Introducing the Portafoglio Portfolio Theme
And that’s where my next project comes into play. During this month of December, I’m working on a new premium WordPress theme called Portafoglio (which is Italian for portfolio — naming themes isn’t always ideal).
Portafoglio will be a great theme to start any portfolio website. While it won’t be completely full-site editing based at the initial release (especially now that a lot of the FSE features in WordPress 5.9 are pushed back to January), it will be easily customizable so that people can build the portfolio site they want to create.
The theme will consist of a lot of blocks and block patterns that can be moved around on a page and placed on any page. With the move to full-site editing coming, WordPress is moving to being more customizable, and I think that’s a good move that I want to copy with this theme. That way it’s easier for you to make your portfolio site look great while also looking different from someone using the same theme.
In the end, Portafoglio will ideally allow you to easily create a website that shows the best of what you can do.
What the portfolio theme will look like
So what will Portafoglio look like once it’s complete?
Well, I’ve left some of the designs of the page templates below so you can see for yourself. As I mentioned before, it’s going to be more-or-less block based, so your pages can look however you want them to. There will be a hero section with a lot of customizable options so you can introduce yourself however you see fit. Also, there will be color options you can choose from, or you can add your own as well if you want.
Aside from that, there will obviously be a portfolio custom post type so that you can add in your portfolio items. And there will be a portfolio listing page template that displays those portfolio items, as well as the single portfolio template. Also, there will be a landing page template that only shows the site header image/logo if someone wants to create a landing page.
Finally, there will be a blog listing template as well as single post templates if you want to talk about topics in your industry.
In the end, I want this to be as customizable as possible so that people can create their own unique portfolios in as easy a process as possible.
The roadmap to a published theme
So what will it take to get this theme out into the wild. Well, as I mentioned above, the designs are now complete and the hard work is about to begin. At this time, I’m still diving into block patterns and how to create them in a sustainable way.
Once that’s done (and a few other things are moved off of my plate), I’ll get to work adding in the global styles — including the header and footer — and creating the blocks and block patterns. It will take some time, but I want to make sure that I get this done correctly the first time.
Right now, I’m aiming for a release date in the first full week of January, but stay tuned to the blog for more information.
