Blogging the NCAA Volleyball Final Four

So as some of you may know, I have been covering the Texas Longhorns volleyball this semester for The Daily Texan. Though there were ups and downs with the team over the course of the season, the Longhorns have made it back to the volleyball Final Four for the third-straight year and since the Final Four this year is being held up in Oklahoma City, I’m making the three-hour trip up from the DFW area to cover the tournament as the Longhorns look for their second title in three years.

The semifinals on Thursday will be very interesting. Texas will square off against unseeded BYU. The Cougars are only the third unseeded team in tournament after knocking out the, 11th overall seed Arizona, sixth overall seed Florida State and the 14th overall Nebraska, who took out the third overall seed Washington on its home court. It’ll be a battle between a team known for it’s blocking and a team that led the country in blocking this season. The other semifinal will pit the top overall seed Stanford against perennial title contender and fifth seed Penn State. That will likely be the match of the tournament and I’m pretty excited to see that one in person.

As I did with the Lafayette Regional in softball back in May, I plan on live blogging the Final Four. As always, I’ll be posting primarily on Twitter at @ViewFromTheBox and then game updates will also be on The Daily Texan Sports Twitter (@texansports). Within each section for each day, posts will be in ascending order with the latest post first.

Tuesday

Well, after six hours on the road, I’ve finally made it to Oklahoma City. This will be the centerpiece for all things volleyball for the next few days.

Three hours in and I’m finally in Oklahoma. Not exactly going to plan today.

Obligatory "I'm in a new state" photo. Only took me three hours.

Well, it’s taken me well over an hour to get out of my own country. Not a fan of DFW traffic.

Well here goes nothing. On the way to OKC.

Wednesday

Well, today is all done in terms of media stuff. Everyone’s said their piece and now what’s left is to play the semifinal games. Good evening and good night from a wet and cold Oklahoma City.

Caught some of Penn State’s practice on my way out of the arena today. Place will be jumping tomorrow.

Some quotes from the Penn State press conference:

Some quotes from the Stanford press conference:

Earlier today Texas landed four players on the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America teams, plus one player was an honorable mention.

The rest of the AVCA All-America teams can be found here.

Got into the arena just in time to see Texas wrap up its morning practice. Now for lunch before the media interview sessions starting at 12:30.

Good morning from Oklahoma City! The city is certainly ready to host this year’s Final Four. Should be great.

Thursday

My seat for the match tonight.

Roughly 90 minutes until the first semifinal match between BYU and Texas and this is the line waiting to get into the arena.

Good evening from downtown OKC! After a calm morning and afternoon this place will be rocking for the semifinals tonight.

So the week didn’t quite turn out like I thought it would for a number of reasons. After Texas lost Thursday night, Friday was both boring and busy with Christmas shopping to do and what not. Then Saturday I was sick and couldn’t go to the final match.

But now I’m back in Texas ready to celebrate the holidays!

Never been so excited to cross a state like. Back in Texas.
